The House is now in recess for the next five weeks, while the Senate will continue to work during parts of August.
US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) appointed himself to the Farm Bill Conferees (committee) and noting a commitment to complete the bill by Labor Day, well before Sept. 30th. President Trump tweeted in support of SNAP work requirements. There is much to be done in committee with the varying House & Senate bill differences. A comparison is available per request.
An article published by the Bangor Daily News, “Proposed Farm Bill amendment could negate local food laws in Maine” highlights an amendment by Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, ‘the Protect Interstate Commerce Act of 2018’ which seeks to “add language to the House version of the Farm Bill that would prevent states and local jurisdictions from interfering with the production and distribution of agricultural products in interstate or foreign commerce and for other purposes.”
