AUGUSTA — Maine Departments of Labor (MDOL) and Education (DOE) launched the Youth Employment and the Steps to Success Initiative (YES) earlier this year to create awareness around the reciprocal benefits of youth employment and to help address the state’s workforce needs in this era of historically-low unemployment rate and tight labor market. The Department of Labor is offering youth-employment reminders for minors in the workplace, students, parents, and employers.

The House is now in recess for the next five weeks, while the Senate will continue to work during parts of August.
US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) appointed himself to the Farm Bill Conferees (committee) and noting a commitment to complete the bill by Labor Day, well before Sept. 30th. President Trump tweeted in support of SNAP work requirements. There is much to be done in committee with the varying House & Senate bill differences. A comparison is available per request.

Senate Passes Senate Ag Farm Bill (86-11)
This week, the Senate overwhelmingly passed their version of the farm bill in a bipartisan 86-11 vote, which will set up a House-Senate conference to reconcile the two chambers’ bills. Both the House and Senate will be out of session next week for the July 4th district work period.
